If you are wondering how to begin, your pathway does not need to be complicated.
1. Find a qualified freediving instructor or school.
Look at the people teaching, not only the logo printed on the certification.
2. Take a beginner freediving course appropriate for your experience.
Learn theory, technique, equalization and safety rather than trying to prove how deep you can dive.
3. Learn to be a competent buddy.
This is part of becoming a freediver, not something you delegate to more experienced people forever.
4. Practice the fundamentals.
Good body position, efficient movement, relaxation, equalization and safety will take you surprisingly far.
5. Build experience before chasing numbers.
Depth is an outcome. Do not make it your only measurement of progress.
6. Keep learning.
Further courses, guided training, workshops, trips and coaching become useful at different stages depending on your goals.
You may ultimately want to explore reefs at ten metres.
You may fall in love with depth.
You may prefer pool disciplines.
You may discover competition.
You may eventually become an instructor.
There is no requirement to choose that destination on day one.
